Bio-informatics is a new area in which the knowledge of DNA, proteins and the functions of proteins is applied to biological questions and problems. The genes that drive the production of our proteins all have their own sequence of nucleotides and thus of amino acids. Nowadays, these sequences are determined at a high rate and saved in large databases on the internet. The DNA sequence (nucleotides) as well as the protein sequence (amino acids). These sequences can be questioned and searched. For instance if you have a gene that causes a particular disease, you can search the databases for a gene that looks like yours and thus maybe has a similar function. This way a medicine or a diagnostic test can be found faster.

Bio-informaticians are specialized in using specific tools and programs which help to analyze and characterize DNA- and potein sequences. But a Bio-informatician also writes these programs himself and thus has knowledge of programming and computers.

You understand that knowledge of DNA and proteins is very important for the performance of these tasks. You must understand the structure of proteins, their function and the relation between those two very well. You must have knowledge of areas as chemistry, genetics, informatics and statistics. Bio-informatics is a world in which this information is combined to a unique working field. A field that has a promising future.
